Princeton University's Office of Information Technology is seeking a Network Security Engineer to join its Networking and Monitoring Services group. The network security engineer provides support in designing, deploying and managing a complex campus core network security infrastructure, including network firewalls, access controls, VPN, SIEM, and security monitoring. The engineer will work on a number of major project activities, including the design and deployment of a campus-wide next-generation network firewall infrastructure, as well as VPN, SIEM, and DDOS deployments.
Managing and designing VPN, SIEM, and future firewall
Responsible for supporting the design, delivery and performance of security infrastructure and services, such as the firewall, VPN, SIEM, security monitoring, etc.
Ensures that the network security services are effective in enforcing the security policy of the campus, and responsive to the needs of the community.
Closely collaborates with peer network engineering staff to architect, deploy, configure and maintain the campus core network infrastructure.
Builds dashboards and provides network analytics and reporting to the community.
Works with others in OIT to design and implement redundant and survivable networks and monitoring systems in accordance with disaster recovery and emergency planning teams.
Establishes automated processes to monitor applications and minimize failures or degraded performance, and alert administrators to problems.
Provide advanced troubleshooting assistance, and routinely collaborate with IT teams on operational issues, projects, and initiatives.
Provide on-call support on a routine schedule to perform network upgrades, execute maintenance changes, and resolve emergency issues outside normal business hours.
Establish and maintain standards, policies, documentation, and logs for networking and monitoring systems.
Investigate and respond to any complaints regarding abuses involving networking systems.
Regularly monitor vendor and security organization bulletins for security vulnerabilities and bug fixes.
Routinely review and test backup and restore procedures for networking and monitoring systems.
Regularly review networking and system log files and resolve any issues identified.
This is a one-year, benefits eligible term position.
3-years of experience working in an IT security position
Experience with supporting medium to large network and monitoring infrastructure.
Programming experience with Python, shell scripting or Perl
Demonstrated innovative thinker and creative problem solver.
Knowledge and experience in network design and operations.
Demonstrated skill in solving complex problems in the network environment particularly in the areas of packet switching, IP routing, wireless communications and IP-based telephony/VoIP.
Extensive understanding of network protocols including TCP/IP.
Demonstrated ability to adapt to multiple operating systems and platforms.
Excellent oral and written communications skills in this highly collaborative environment.
Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, to respond to shifting priorities, and to work efficiently under the pressure of critical problems and deadlines.
Ability to work outside of normal working hours and be on call to perform network maintenance and support unexpected critical network failures.
Ability to work independently, as well as in a team environment.
Bachelor's degree or equivalent working experience in computer science or related field.
