UW Bioengineering naturally evolved from partnerships between engineering and medicine. Today, our faculty and students continually reach across traditional boundaries in education and research. The interdisciplinary scope of our research spans five overarching themes: regenerative medicine and biomaterials, molecular and cellular engineering, imaging and image-guided therapy, technology to improve access to health care, and systems and synthetic biology.
Bioengineering's Prosthetic Engineering research and currently has an outstanding opportunity for a full time RESEARCH ELECTRICAL ENGINEER 1 eager to make a positive difference in the lives of people with lower-limb loss. Our group has a 25-year history of creating new sensing modalities for prosthetists and amputee patients, most of them involving portable sensors for field use. Data from our systems provide key insight to clinicians treating amputee patients, and provide feedback signals to automated control systems that adjust prosthetic sockets during use so as to maintain fit, function, and high-level performance.
We are a 15-person interdisciplinary group of bioengineers, clinicians, mechanical and electrical engineers and software specialists. The research is focused on development and implementation of novel measurement techniques for external prosthetics. The goal of the projects is to create instruments to help practitioners better understand patient prosthetic fit problems and select treatments to improve function and quality of life.
We are looking for an enthusiastic engineer to join our team who has experience in programming control systems on custom microcontroller boards. The applicant should be interested in agile, end-to-end design, and be eager to interact with other team members to create effective, novel, electromechanical systems.
Programming ARM microcontroller based devices
Debugging custom designed boards with lab test equipment such as an oscilloscope
Document work clearly for preparation of manuscripts and funding agency progress reports
Participate in conducting human subject studies for prosthetic research
Design embedded control systems of novel prosthetic devices
Conduct design reviews with research team and with study volunteers
Bachelor's Degree in Science, Engineering, Design, or Related Discipline.
Minimum 3- 12 months of experience working in a research or industry environment.
Programming ARM microcontrollers in C/C++
Programming embedded control systems for electromechanical devices
Ability to debug custom designed electronics boards with laboratory equipment
Ability to interact regularly with and gather feedback from clinicians and amputee study volunteers
Capability to work well with a team of interdisciplinary engineers and practitioners
Willingness and ability to learn basic operation and function of novel electromechanical systems
Capability to write manuscript-quality descriptions of research efforts and results
Strong critical thinking and analysis aptitude
Desired skills and attributes::
Experience with Altium
Integrating third party libraries
Proficiency in Matlab
Proficiency in Python programming
Experience in wireless communication either WIFI or Bluetooth
Ability to independently prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines; ability to delegate tasks and seek help
Experience in the development of global health diagnostic and treatment technologies.
