What you’ll be doing...
HQ RAN Planning and Strategy Team is seeking a passionate, goal-driven individual who is comfortable to take on the role of Distinguished Engineer– Network Infrastructure Planning. You will act as a technical product manager and engineer focused on RAN virtualization planning. You will take ownership of the long-term vision and the resolve to build the foundation for virtualized RAN. You will be involved in building strategic virtualization frameworks using external and internal teams, with focus set on final value delivered to the organization. You will partner to ensure a 3+ year strategy is developed and applied within the markets and ensure we are planning for the best performance from HW and application workloads. You will also build on the VRAN ecosystem, working with internal teams, industry partners, universities and startups to facilitate expansion and adoption of the VRAN portfolio. You will provide technical leadership and direction to vendors and supporting organizations within the Network and Technology organization.
Perform evaluation of new technologies and their applicability to Verizon service strategy. Create a report based on early evaluation, and identify opportunities across all components of the network including handset. Responsibilities include working with internal teams in commercializing new technologies and services.
Evaluating and influencing standards to meet our needs for supporting ORAN, VRAN, functionalities both short and long term.
Researching and evaluating new technologies and translate business objectives and strategies into viable plans.
Developing requirements and drive vendors to support system needs.
Analyzing a variety of network solutions from various vendors, determine technical and financial tradeoffs and present solid recommendations.
Conducting feasibility analysis and vendor evaluation, which includes leading RFP efforts, developing project plans, managing contracts and vendors and supporting deployment.
Interfacing with internal teams such as device, service performance, territory performance and network planning. Maintain competitive technology information. Interface with external entities: 3GPP, device, chipset and infrastructure OEMs to drive the ecosystem forward to achieve Verizon goals. Advise on multi-million dollar savings. Evaluate vendors based on complex technical criteria and commercial should-cost criteria.
Coordinating with various account managers, program managers, vendors, and make sure solutions are delivered. Interacting with multiple vendors across various technical functional areas to develop cost effective solutions.
Identifying opportunities for automation for major 5G features. Acquire in-depth, and hands on understanding of the SON platform to ensure integration of 5G features in the SON ecosystem early in the cycle.
Developing detailed Verizon technical requirements for new features/capabilities.
Negotiating contracts with vendors for new applications and services. Drive contracts to completion with sourcing partners.
In this hybrid role, you will have a defined work location that includes work from home and assigned office days set by your manager.
What we’re looking for...
You’ll need to have:
Bachelor’s degree or four or more years of work experience.
Six or more years of relevant work experience.
Working knowledge of 3GPP standards and experience in RAN(5G NR, 4G, advanced antenna systems, RF) and/or virtualization and/or packet core and/or end-to-end systems(such as vRAN), in both understanding of technology and features.
Even better if you have:
Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication, or Software Engineering, or Telecommunications Engineering.
Eight or more years of diverse cellular wireless technology experience in design, development, test and system engineering.
Experience in Project Management and Wireless Network (3GPP).
Demonstrates system engineering mindset level understanding with the ability to dive and surface and proven record in building complex systems in a Greenfield environment. Write clear, succinct requirements and associated test strategies with the ability to follow through the solution delivery.
Work experience in wireless product development, product system engineering, planning, performance, and/or architecture.
Experience with new wireless communication technologies such as 5G NR, LTE advanced Pro, Massive MIMO, HetNet, CRAN, VRAN, Mobile Edge Computing, Cloud architecture, CAT-M, IoT, SON.
Five or more years of experience with Radio Access interface specifications, configuration, and network optimization. In-depth knowledge of 3GPP LTE/NR wireless standards, track record of the creation of original ideas in academia and/or industry. Multiple successful deployment of such ideas which resulted in financial benefit.
More than five years of experience with designing and delivering radio access network solutions in collaboration with multi-functional teams. Work experience as a system developer, integrator, problem investigator, and system engineer.
More than five years of experience with solving network capacity, coverage problems and ability to proactively look for improvement opportunities resulting in financial benefit.
Experience with large scale wireless communication gear software architecture, product software system engineering, or wireless product development work.
Knowledge of new virtualization techniques like containers and their orchestration/LCM - Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, and WebScale architect.
Ability to generate, understand and interpret technology standards and make it a part of the design solution for projects.
Knowledge of silicon used for development of RAN products, including general purpose processors, FPGAs and custom ASICs.
Analytical ability to evaluate compute needs for variety of processors, deployment scenarios and call models.
Analytical skills to develop targets, assess & test performance of RAN workloads.
Experience working with virtualized/containerized RAN implementations a plus. Experience working on open interfaces between RAN components.
Demonstrate core competencies with result focused, strategic thinking, relationship building, influencing and inspirational leadership.
Interpersonal and leadership skills along with organizational and people management skills.
Detail oriented, motivated to learn independently, and ability to navigate cross functional team dynamics.
Contract negotiation and vendor management experience.
Experience leading technical deployment of new wireless products and services.
Experience creating and presenting technical recommendations to stakeholders and leadership teams.
Previous work experience with embedded C/C++, DSP/Power quick development work, UE logprocessing, network analysis tools.
