Department Overview
Patients in Interventional Radiology are cared for by a multidisciplinary team including Registered Nurses, Interventional Radiology Technologists, and Interventionalists. The department is open Monday through Friday from 07:30 to 16:00 for routine and emergent cases and an on-call team is available 7 days a week for all cases after routine hours of operation.
The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) is part of the health care team and utilizes her/his knowledge and skills to support and enhance safety, patient experience, communications, and efficiency on nursing units. The HUC, under the direct supervision of the Nurse Manager, Charge Nurse, or Lead Tech, performs general non-clinical duties and specific services necessary to expedite the efficient functioning of the procedure unit consistent with the philosophy, goals, policies and procedures in the nursing department and OHSU.
Function/Duties of Position
SAFETY & PATIENT EXPERIENCE - Act to promote a safe environment and Patient and Family Centered Care across the continuum to promote service excellence to foster exceptional experiences for our patients
- Greet and screen visitors
- Maintain Vendor calendar
- Update whiteboards and call boards
- Maintain census in Epic as well as Status Boards
- Conduct safety/environment of care surveillance
- Post Isolation signs
- Print wrist bands
- Make charts for procedure patients
- Facilitate patient and family experiences
- Assist with communications between patient/family and healthcare team members
- Provide way finding
- Obtains any additional records requested by care team for the procedural patients

- Activate MyChart (as requested)
- Activate Emergency response when needed
- Make post-discharge follow-up appointments (as requested)
- Support patient and family centered care across the continuum through Service Excellence
COMMUNICATIONS & OPERATIONS - Support operations necessary to meet the needs of the unit
- Communicate in a respectful, caring and non-judgmental manner
- Facilitates unit flow:
- Receive information from IR providers, Charge Nurse, Lead Tech about inpatient add-ons and communicate to the scheduling team to add to the daily schedule
- Communicate add on procedures to Charge Nurse and Lead Tech as necessary
- Communicates concerns about upcoming schedule to Charge Nurse, Scheduler, Provider or managers as appropriate
- Facilitate unit communications
- Answer phones
- Assist with paging
- Update patient schedule on white board
- Manage Vocera wireless communication devices
- Schedule VIP (hospital transport) requests - and update as needed
- Be an active participant in the daily readiness huddle
- Follow up on quick hits from daily readiness huddles
- Report and track equipment requiring maintenance
- Order and stock office supplies
- Send/receive materials in P-tube
- Deliver and pick up specimens
- Pick up medications from pharmacy
- Place Equipment Pool orders
- Reconcile Epic downtime entries (census)
- Receive medical record faxes and scan into Epic
- Scan consent forms into Epic
- Communicate with IR customers (patients, faculty, and staff) in Spanish as appropriate
RESOURCE - Serve as a resource to the unit to expedite the efficient functioning of the unit
- Request and track ITG/Facilities work orders
- Communicate with inpatient units at direction of Charge Nurse, Lead Tech, or Manager
- Checks in patients as needed
- Resolve printer malfunctions
- Documents fire drills in Sentact
- Maintain employee phone list (as requested)
- Scan and Maintain regulatory records into on-base
- Create, print, and distribute flyers
- Deliver mail
- Other duties as assigned
- Demonstrate performance consistent with Departmental, Divisional and Organizational expectations and core competencies
- Maintain confidentiality and privacy of patient information
- Prioritize HUC responsibilities and seek consultation when needed
- Perform area specific skills and follow established protocols
- Demonstrate fiscal accountability and the effective use of resources.
- Assume responsibility for professional / job related development, knowledge of advances in technology, use of new equipment and appropriate application of hospital systems; maintain knowledge base essential to the role of Health Unit Coordinator
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- One year of clerical experience in a health care environment or equivalent combination of experience and training that would provide knowledge and skills listed below
- Demonstrated strong communication and organization skills
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology, abbreviations and symbols
- Ability to read, write and speak fluent English
- Basic math skills
- Demonstrated computer skills
- Demonstrated customer service skills
- Ability to prioritize and multi-task
- Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous hospital or clerical experience preferred
- Customer service related experience preferred
- Previous ICU, hospital, or clerical experience preferred
- Certified Nursing Assistant 2 preferred
- Previous experience working with Epic
- National Health Unit Coordinator certification preferred
